Purpose / Outline

Plan

We will continue to improve the level of our research activities, which ranks among leading institutions of mathematics in the world. We will make full use of this advantage in fostering international leaders in the field of mathematics research and experts in advanced mathematics working in various fields in academia, industry and society.

Outline

Our COE project consists of three parts, which will cooperate closely with each other in achieving the objectives.

Fostering the next-generation of leaders in mathematics

(i) We will offer positions to young mathematicians ranging from postdoctoral to tenure-track levels. The rank of the appointments will depend on candidates’ accomplishments and potential.

(ii) We will give young mathematicians opportunities to conduct their research abroad, by providing financial support and by helping them contact host institutions in foreign countries.

(iii) Excellent graduate students from overseas institutions will be encouraged to visit our graduate school. This will stimulate the students in our center and raise the level of their research.

Training graduate students for work in various fields

Experts in mathematics can contribute to various fields in academia, industry, and society. This is, however, not always fully recognized by industry and society in Japan.

(i) We will appoint an advisory board of company executives and researchers from the banking, insurance, construction, information technology, bioscience, and economics sectors. With the help of this advisory board, we will then launch an educational program to train graduate students to become experts in mathematics, working in a range of industries and research institutes. An executive committee will drive forward the program with helps of alumni working in the society.

(ii) We will invite active researchers from various fields in industry and academia to train our graduate students in order to enhance their career path options after graduation. By means of this process, we will also strive to ensure that executives in industry recognize the importance of employing mathematicians with a doctoral degree.

(iii) We will establish a more flexible standard of doctoral degree in mathematics that is suitable for those who have acquired a high level of mathematical knowledge and are ready to work in various fields in academia and industry.

(iv) We will make an interactive learning system in the graduate school with helps by postdoctorial fellows. We will offer research fellow positions to train educational skills under guidance of well experienced staffs.

(v) We will cultivate students who will become good (junior) high school teachers after the graduation.

(vi) We will assign gratuate students to teaching assistants (TA) and research assistants (RA). The purpose of this system is to give a financial support and improve the teaching skills.

Development of an international mathematics research center

(i) We will promote the research activities of our COE through four research groups: [G1] Integration of algebraic geometry and number theory, [G2] Global symmetry with infinitely many degrees of freedom, [G3] Mathematical analysis of complex phenomena, and [G4] Applied mathematics of computation and optimization.

(ii) We will invite leading mathematicians as visiting professors. They will deliver lectures for young researchers and graduate students.

We further continue the following programs which were successful in the 21st century COE program

(a) We will run education programs staying together in a camp or lectures in the semester.

(b) We will make an international exchange program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with foreign universities and institutes, including Seoul National University in Korea, the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) in Canada, and Center for the Topology and Quantization of Moduli Spaces in Demmark.

(c) We will cooperate with the annual “International Research Projects” program run by the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS), Kyoto University.
