Abstract The latest increases in computing power bring the possibility of replacing inaccurate parameterizations of deep cumulus clouds currently in global weather forecast models with calculations based more directly on the fundamental equations of fluid dynamics, thereby eliminating one of the greatest weaknesses in such models. This improvement will require changes in the equations used in global atmospheric models, the grid structures used to represent atmospheric variables, and the algorithms used to solve those equations. A range of possible approaches will be briefly reviewed. Particular emphasis will be given to the advantages and weakness of Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes for high resolution atmospheric modeling. A new efficient DG method is presented that preserves non-negative scalar fields without reducing the effective order of accuracy of the method. Test cases are discussed involving one- and two-dimensional flows.
